St. Louis, MO - The St. Louis Cardinals have signed outfielder Randy Winn, who was designated for assignment by the New York Yankees on May 28.

Winn, who will turn 36 on Wednesday, was in his first season with the Yankees and struggled at the plate. He hit .213 with a .300 on-base percentage and one home run in 29 games.

Winn is in his 13th major league season, having played with Tampa Bay, Seattle, San Francisco and the Yankees. He owns a career batting average of .285 with a .344 OBP, 107 homers and 210 stolen bases in 1,630 games.

"Once we saw that Randy had become available, we quickly reached out to him," said Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak. "He is a veteran outfielder who we think will help improve our depth. His versatility and experience should be a real nice fit for our roster."

On Saturday, the Cardinals also optioned outfielder Jon Jay to Triple-A Memphis and transferred pitcher Kyle Lohse to the 60-day disabled list.

Lohse is out after having forearm surgery May 28, while Jay hit .302 (13- for-43) with a homer in 26 games this season for St. Louis.
