Peter Orr appeared headed to the Philadelphia Phillies in a backup role a week ago.

Now, the Newmarket infielder has re-signed with the Washington Nationals.

Orr will compete for the starting second base job with Anderson Hernandez, who appeared in 16 games at second for Washington this season. Orr was in seven.

In his first year with Washington, Orr, 29, hit .253 with seven RBIs in 49 games.

Orr, who will make $600,000 US with the Nationals or $20,000 per month in the minors, is assured of being the starting second baseman for Team Canada when it opens the World Baseball Classic against Team USA at the Rogers Centre on March 7.
