His rock ’n’ roll tune is helping fuel a baseball team’s charge at the World Series.

“They wanted something to excite their fans,” said Winnipegger Darren Moore.

Since the start of the 2008 baseball season, a song he wrote for the Tampa Bay Rays called “Feel the Heat Rays” has been played at their home games and on promotional spots on radio.

“The whole community has really supported it,” said Moore, who also plays keyboards and guitar in local Winnipeg rockers Harlequin.

Moore previously wrote a song for the Toronto Blue Jays and a colleague who put him in touch with that team also helped facilitate the work for the Rays.

The team’s management were looking for help re-branding Tampa Bay’s baseball franchise and wanted something to inspire fans at their games.

“They wanted a whole new look, something positive,” said Moore, explaining the team was seeking something to help improve morale coming on the heels of a losing record in 2007.

He set out to craft a tune with “pep” and wrote lyrics to reflect local area landmarks.

“I was trying to relate to the team and trying to relate to the fans,” he said.

In creating the song for the Rays, he drew inspiration from music used in NASCAR events.

“It’s heavy and it’s driving and it really grabs your attention. That’s what I thought we should inject into baseball,” said Moore.

At earlier games, he noticed fans bringing in cowbells as noisemakers so he added plenty of that instrument into the mix.

Now, fans have been bringing cowbells to play along with the song.

Moore has also had the chance to check out a few Tampa Bay games this year and has heard his song piped through speakers.

“It’s flattering. It’s somewhat surreal,” said Moore, who plays all the instruments and sings on the track.

His daughter Sarah also adds vocals.

After the team won the American League Championship Series last weekend, they sent Moore a thank you for his help getting fans charged up.

The Winnipeg songwriter said he’s pleased to see the Rays doing so well.

“Nobody every expected them to make it this far,” he said. “But here they are in the World Series ... they’ve got a real team spirit.”
