The Boston Red Sox arrived in Tokyo early yesterday after an 18-hour flight ready to open their season in Japan.

Daisuke Matsuzaka drew the most attention from a large group of Japanese photographers that greeted the Red Sox at the airport.

The Red Sox and Oakland Athletics play two exhibition games against Japanese teams March 22-23. Then they face each other in Major League Baseball's regular-season opener March 25, the earliest start in MLB history.

HALL OF FAME JAY?

Only three players who suited up for the Toronto Blue Jays are in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and all of them are wearing another team's cap.

Should he find his way to Cooperstown down the road, former 2B Roberto Alomar hopes to change that.

"If one day I get inducted to the Hall of Fame, I would love (it) to be with a Toronto Blue Jays hat," he said yesterday.

RYAN COMEBACK ON HOLD

Toronto Blue Jays closer B.J. Ryan, who had Tommy John elbow surgery last season, complained of soreness in his throwing arm yesterday and will be held out of games for at least a few days.

As the Jays dealt with that news, the team dropped a 7-2 decision to the Yankees in spring training yesterday.
