Juan Samuel played 16 years in the majors appearing in 1,720 games including 157 games over his final three seasons with the Blue Jays (1996-98).

His best day in baseball?

"When I was with the Phillies they had Juan Samuel Poster Day (Aug. 12, 1987)," said the Baltimore Orioles third base coach. "Every year, they'd give away a poster of a player and called it "The Pride of the Phillies." It was always the final midweek day game of the season at Veteran's Stadium.

"We were tied 7-7 in the eighth against the Chicago Cubs and I hit a grand slam to left off Ed Lynch."

Darren Daulton, Steve Jeltz and Mike Schmidt all scored on Samuel's 22nd homer. The Phillies scored two more for a 13-7 win.

"I phoned Larry (The Baron) Shenk in the front office and said: 'Baron we need to have Juan Samuel Poster Day more often.'

"He said: 'If you can guarantee the same results every time, we'll have it once a week."

Samuel finished his career with 161 homers, his best year being 1987 when he hit .272 with 28 homers and 100 RBIs.
