Bedard opens it up

Lefty Erik Bedard joins a small group of Canadian pitchers when he starts for the Baltimore Orioles tomorrow night against the Twins in Minneapolis.

Bedard, of Navan, Ont., is only the fourth Canadian to start on opening day. Bedard was 15-11 with a 3.76 earned run average in 2006.

In 33 starts, Bedard allowed 196 hits in 1961/3 innings, walking 69 and striking out 171. He was 0-2 in two starts against the Twins last season.

Georgetown's Shawn Hill is second out of the box for the Washington Nationals against the Florida Marlins.

Lefty Jeff Francis, of North Delta, B.C., works the Colorado Rockies' second game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Rich Harden of Victoria, starts the third game of the season for the Oakland A's.

Hall of Famer Fergie Jenkins, of Chatham made 11 opening day starts in his career, while Ryan Dempster of Gibsons, B.C., made two and Oscar Judd, of London one.
