The book on ... Vlad Guerrero

What a major-league scout says: "I know some guys may like Larry Walker better, but in my opinion he's the best position player the Expos have ever produced. And I'll put him up against Gary Carter too.

"Sure some nights he's like Raul Mondesi -- his arm has never met a cut-off man he couldn't overthrow, but I'll take him on my team any day. He's above average with the glove and I like his range, the only thing I'd wish is that he didn't try and show off his arm so much.

"At the plate he's very, very tough to pitch to ... for the simple reason that he does not have any holes in the strike zone. I know some pitchers who have told me he's more dangerous when they try and waste a pitch out of the zone.

"He's a pure hitter, I don't know how much studying of pitchers he does, but he can flat-out hit. Very, very dangerous, the one guy you do not want to beat you."
