The book on ... Mark Kotsay

What a major-league scout says: "I love Mark Kotsay. He plays the game the right way. He is an outstanding defender and he hits with power. I think he has hit 17 (his career high in 2002 with San Diego), but some year he will get to 20 to 25 homers.

"Most of all, he is a baseball player. He was a two-way guy coming Cal-State Fullerton -- he pitched and played the outfield -- when Orrin Freeman and the Florida Marlins did a heck of a job drafting him in the first round, ninth overall, in 1996.

"In 1997 he was in the big leagues for a taste and the next year he was there to stay. I know we'd like to have him but Billy Beane has him as an untouchable, well as untouchable as Billy Beane has any player."
