How the betting works

Using the example of a Major League Baseball game this summer, Allen's team of computer scientists and mathematicians will enter the starting lineup for both teams, the projected starting pitcher, the bullpen staff and pertinent circumstances surrounding the game.

With the computer armed with pitch-by-pitch data for every real game for the last 10 years, the computer will then run 100,000 simulated games using the stats database and the lineup for the real game that night.

"If you replay a game 100,000 times, it gives you a pretty good likelihood of how the game will be (in reality)," said Allen.
