Paul Beeston wasn't the least bit surprised that former Blue Jays general manager Pat Gillick took the same job with the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday.

Beeston, who was the Jays president back in the World Series championship years, said he couldn't think of anyone better to take the Phillies forward.

"I think he is the perfect fit," Beeston said yesterday at the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, where he was inducted as a builder.

"It's a team that is ready to explode and Pat has proven over the years that he is the guy you want to be in charge of your team in that situation," he said.

Beeston said that he knew Gillick was anxious to get back into the game after stints as GM in Baltimore and Seattle after his tenure in Toronto.

"Pat wants to be back in baseball and he wants to be a general manager," Beeston said. "I couldn't be more pleased for him. This is what he wants to do."
