A BORDERS COMBO

- The double-play combination for the little Lake Wales All-Stars is made up of shortstop Levi Borders, 12 and second baseman Luke Borders, 11. And proud papa Pat, the former Blue Jay, now with the Seattle Mariners reports that Lake Wales knocked off two Tampa teams to reach the state championship. "Levi is a little like Khalil Green, but Luke is too big to play second, he'll probably be a third baseman or a catcher when he gets older." How tough is it to make a phone call and go through each at-bat with his sons proceeding through the playdowns? "It's good and bad," Borders said this week. "I've seen a few games on our off days and when we were in Tampa. But in the winter when I ask them whether I should play another year, they always say yes. They're more proud of me now than when they were younger."

BIG DOUGH

- Mississauga righty Chris Leroux was selected in the seventh round by the Florida Marlins. The player in front of him received a signing bonus of $115,000 US, while the player after him was given $110,000. Both were high schoolers. Leroux, meanwhile, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, wasn't pitching and will not pitch until again until next April. Yet, Leroux was so impressive with his 95 mile-per-hour fastball before being injured, that the Marlins gave him a $152,000 bonus.
