- Slugging first baseman Richie Sexson is close to signing with the Seattle Mariners, who say that they will sign both Carlos Delgado and Sexson if they can. - The Chicago White Sox have been told by the Arizona Diamondbacks that lefty Randy Johnson is not available.

- Both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox are offering free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria a four-year deal. Boston wants Renteria over Orlando Cabrera, who helped them win a World Series.

- The Florida Marlins are attempting to sign lefty Odalis Perez.

- The San Diego Padres are trying to pry outfielder Dave Roberts away from the Red Sox.

- The Los Angeles Dodgers are thought to be the forerunners in the chase for Oakland Athletics right-hander Tim Hudson. The Dodgers can offer right-hander Edwin Jackson as well as infielder Alex Cora. The other players after Hudson are the Cardinals, the Baltimore Orioles and the Anaheim Angels. If the Angels land Hudson it would knock them out of the chase for Matt Clement.

- Besides taking an interest in free agent Carlos Delgado, New York Mets GM Omar Minaya still is working on acquiring Sammy Sosa from the Chicago Cubs. Minaya is close to signing outfielder Moises Alou as well.
