Parker, Lennerton impress

BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Sports

, Last Updated: 2:30 PM ET

Not the best of weeks for Jordan Lennerton.

He only managed two hits for the 8th-ranked Oregon State Beavers in a three-game series against the South California Trojans.

Then he added three against Portland.

So, what's he doing wearing SLAM! Canadian Player of the Week honours?

Well, he hit .357 (5-for-14) with two homers, a .786 slugging percentage and six RBIs.

Meanwhile, way down south, RHP Drew Parker had a two-win week for the the Chipola Indians.

Which makes Parker (freshman, Surrey, BC) and Lennerton (junior, Langley, BC) co-winners of the SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Players of the Week honours for Week Nine.

The weekly award, belated as it is, recognizes the best of the 700 Canadians who playing ball south of the border. The distinction of being No. 700 belongs to 1B Brett Miskokomon (junior, Walpole Island, Ont.) of the Adrian Bulldogs.

Parker and Lennerton edged the likes of CF_Nicholas Boisvert (senior, Laval, Que.), of Lynn Fighting Knights, Zack Dickson (freshman, Oakville, Ont.), of the Central Arkansas Bears, Dillon O'Krane (senior, Langley, BC), of the Brescia Bearcats, Joshua Peley (sophomore, Montreal, Que.), of the Seminole State Trojans; RF Darryl Pui (junior, Thornhill, Ont.), of the South Carolina-Aiken Pacers and Adam Roos (senior, Thunder Bay, Ont), of the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Titans.

How the week went for Parker as he:

_ Pitched eight innings in an 9-3 win against the North Florida Community Osprey. Parker, allowed three runs -- two earned -- on six hits and a walk. In the process of dominating the Osprey he struck out nine.

_ Pitched seven innings in an 8-0 shut out against Okaloosa-Walton. He allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out four.

So in his two starts, Parker pitched 15 innings allowing two earned runs (a 1.20 earned run average) on nine hits. He fanned 13 in 15 innings, while walking two.

Parker pitched for Greg Hamilton's Team Canada National Youth Team and coach Dennis Springenatic with the Fraser Valley_Chiefs.

He was drafted in the 26th round of the 2006 draft by the Tampa Bay Rays when he pitched for the Fraser Valley Chiefs.

In 2006, Parker worked four scoreless innings as Team Canada lost a 2-1 decision to Team USA_at the World Junior championships in Ciego De Avila, Cuba.

And how the week that was went for Lennerton as he:

_ Singled in a run in a 9-5 Oregon State win against the USC Trojans in a 9-3 win before 2,274 fans at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field in Corvallis, Ore. Lennerton singled home a run in the four-run seventh to make it 9-2, but USC scored in the eighth and ninth innings.

_ Was hitless in a 4-1 loss before 2,184 fans.

_ Hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th as Oregon State edged USC 9-8 in front of 1,547 fans. Lennerton drove the first pitch from USC closer Paul Koss over the left-field fence to give the Beavers the series win over the Trojans. The drive dropped Koss n who has 12 saves this season n to 2-2. It was Lennerton's second homer and OSU's first walk-off homer since Shea McFeely's beat Ohio State in the opening game of the 2005 NCAA Corvallis Regional.

"This was a huge win," Lennerton said. "It would have been pretty tough to come back from 1-5 (start in Pac-10 conference play). This was huge to keep our egos up and stay positive."

_ Hit a grand slam and singled twice as Oregon State beat the Portland Pilots 12-4 in front of 1,128 fans. In the eighth, a hit batter, a bunt single by and a pair of walks forced home an OSU run and kept the bases loaded for Lennerton. Lennerton drove a pitch from Ben Panther high over the right-centre field fence for his third home run of the season and a 12-4 Beaver lead. He also singled twice.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder, is in his first year with the defending champs on the way to Omaha and the College World Series after transferring from the El Paso Tejanos.

Lennerton played with the Team Canada National Junior Team and appeared in the 1998 Little League World Series. Like his favorite player, Larry Walker, he swings from the left side. And Lennerton is a man of young man who appreciates classical music. His fave? Country singer George Strait, who has 50 No. 1 hits, more than anyone but Elvis Presley.

In 2006 at El Paso, Lennerton was all-conference first team; batting .416, with 10 home runs, 14 doubles, 63 RBIs, 7 stolen bases.

And in 2005, as a freshman, he earned all-conference honorable mention honours after batting .333, with 11 doubles, two triples, five homers and 24 RBIs.

Lennerton was drafted twice: in the 41st round by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2005 and in the 50th by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2004. He played for coach Doug Mathieson and the Langley Blaze in the Premier League.

But then being drafted and making Williamsport is almost routine in the Lennerton household.

Jordan's older brother Ryan, a left-handed pitcher, also pitched for Langley and Mathieson. Ryan was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers, in the 24th round of 2001, went to Eastern Oklahoma, was drafted again in the 41st round in 2002 , joined the Arkansas Razorbacks and reached the College World Series in Omaha.

Ryan hurt his labrum, went on to be pitching coach for the Galveston Whitecaps and is now pitching coach with the Wayne State Wildcats.

The Lennerton-Langley connection still continues. Their father Cam Lennerton is the groundskeeper at McLeod Athletic Park and was a large part of the small group responsible for building the new stadium.

Not many fathers can say they have had two sons, each of whom have gone to Williamsport for the Little League World Series, have been both been drafted (not once, but twice) and both played in the College World Series.

Letter of the Week:

Q: I very much enjoy your weekly column on Canadians in USA. I try to keep track of them, particularly when they become eligible for the annual draft. However, I am puzzled by your most recent column which includes several Canadians who were selected in the 2008 draft, signed with major league teams and played in the minors. Are such players then eligible to return to college ball?

A: The most recent Player of the Week covers games before the draft. Guess a better name would be the Belated Players of the Week. Yet, rather than ignore their accomplishments we think it is better late than never.

You can't return to college ball unless sitting out a year, while having eligibility remaining.
