BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Sports

, Last Updated: 4:46 PM ET

The loneliest person in sports?

You might think it would be a long-distance runner.

You’d certainly believe that if you read The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner a story by British writer Alan Sillitoe published in 1958, which was later made into a movie.

Yet, we think the loneliest person on a ball team is the guy on rehab.

Players who spend a whole season wearing red as their favorite colour of shirt. The red shirt comes from college football where players who were not eligible wore red shirts at practice.

It's a solitary lifestyle for many. Some say almost as bad as being injured. Injured players rehab alone; riding exercise bikes alone, spend time in the weight room alone.

Whether red-shirted or injured you are excluded from the regular hitting groups where the starters are, where the red-shirt wants to be.

We remember once an injured big-leaguer telling how he wondered whether his shoulder injury was contagious since other players were reluctant to talk to him.

There are two ways a red-shirt can go: sulk and disagree with the decision or work all the harder to be ready.

There is no question which route Dane Embury took after being red-shirted in 2006.

Yet, when the barn door opened on the 2007 season, he came out like an angry Spanish bull who looked out into the arena to see the matador, that same nasty matador, who had been jabbing him from outside the stall each day.

Embury make up for lost time, knocking in 15 runs for the Northern Iowa Panthers on the school’s spring trip.

Also making an impact with the bat is C Lyall Foran of the Norfolk State Spartans. Foran hit .600 with five doubles and seven RBIs.

For their efforts, Embury (junior, Kelowna, BC) and Foran (senior, Delta, BC) are our SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Players of the Week, for Week Five.
