What's the difference between John Mariotti and Mark Wilson?

Well, about three outs ... that's all.

Mariotti, a Coastal Carolina Chanticleers right-hander, pitched a complete-game shutout beating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4-0.

Wilson, a Niagara Purple Eagles right-hander, worked eight innings allowing one run as he kept the Virginia Military Keydets off stride in an 8-1 decision.

Both wound up with the wins.

And both Mariotti (senior, Toronto, Ont.) and Wilson (junior, Peterborough, Ont.) wound up sharing the our SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Players of the Week, for Week Three.

The weekly award, still on time, well sort, of, but with spring trips in progress the streak is about to end (research HELP is needed from a retiree), recognizing the best of the 660 Canadians playing south of the border.

They beat out the likes of LHP Andrew Albers (junior, North Battleford, Sask.), of the Kentucky Wildcats; C Yannick Bergeron (senior, Sherbrooke, Que.), of the St. Edward's Hilltoppers; RHP Chris Hayes (sophomore, Oakville, Ont.), of the Graceland Yellow Jackets; 3B Steve Kletke (freshman, Altona, Man.), of the Iowa Western Reivers; C Brent Lavallee (junior, North Delta, BC), of the Louisiana State Shreveport Pilots; LF Perry Silverman (freshman, Montreal, Que.), of the Canisius Golden Griffs, C Josh Vander Hey (junior, Calgary, Alta.), of the Texas Wesleyan Rams and RHP Kris Webber (junior, Langley, BC), of the Central Missouri Mules.

Mariotti blanked Notre Dame in the final day of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, SC. The 30th-ranked Coastal opened with an 11-6 win over the TCU Horned Frogs and then the Chants were blanked 4-0 by the North Carolina Tar Heels.

The burly righty struck out 10 in the complete-game win over the Fighting Irish. From the outset he was on his game, retiring the first eight batters, four on strikeouts and had only one base runner on in the final three innings, which came on an error. The 10 whiffs were a career high and his earned-run average dropped to 0.43.

Mariotti threw 118 pitches as he went the distance, 76 for strikes in 63-degree weather.

He struck out five on 2-2 pitches, two when it was a 1-2 count, two on an 0-2 pitches, one on a 3-2 pitch. Three of his strikeouts were looking. He recorded 10 ground ball outs and seven fly ball outs.

Mariotti allowed five hits in all: a two-out single in the third, a lead-off single in the fourth, a double in the fourth, a one-out single and a double in the sixth. With one out and men on second and third in the sixth, Mariotti recorded back-to-back strikeouts.

The former Hamilton Thunderbird, who pitched for Murray Marshall after his days as an indoor Mini-Dome stud and then pitched and hit for the Gulf Coast Commodores, is now 1-0.

In 2006, Mariotti On the mound he was 5-2 with a 5.19 ERA with 39 strikeouts. He led the team with five wins and tied for the Coastal lead with three saves. At the plate, he appeared in 33 games hitting .305 with five doubles, six home runs and 25 RBIs. He slugged .543 and had a .448 on-base percentage.

In 2005, he was at Gulf Coast College in Panama City, Fla. for his second year and earned First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-State honors.

In 2004 he earned All-Conference Second Team selection and was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and scout Alex Messier in 2004 and in 2003.

With Marshall's Hamilton Astros he reached AABC World Series in Texas in 2001.

  • Wilson was equally impressive for Niagara beating VMI 8-1 before 223 fans at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington, Va. Wilson struck out 12 men -- no less than eight looking -- as well as recording 11 ground ball outs and one fly ball out. He started off by striking out the side in the first.

    "He had command of all three of his pitches and didn't face a three-ball count all game," said Niagara coach Chris Chernisky. "He kept VMI off balance with his repertoire of pitches."

    After retiring the first seven in order, Wilson allowed a one-out double and a two-out single to cut Niagara's lead to 2-1. Wilson didn't allow another base runner until one out in the seventh when a man reached on a throwing error and he gave up a one-out single before getting an inning-ending double play.

    RP Geoff Strong (freshman, Welland, Ont.) followed Wilson to the mound in the ninth and recorded a 1-2-3 inning, including a strikeout.

    3B Chris Leendertse (sophomore, Hamilton, Ont.) singled homered and knocked in two runs, while SS Andrew Macdonald (junior, Charlottetown, PEI) singled and knocked in two runs. 2B Harrison Harber (junior, Kanata, Ont.) singled and knocked in a run.

  • Harber hit a solo homer as Niagara lost to VMI 8-3 in front of 323 fans. It was Harber's first homer of the season and came in the fifth inning, after the Keydets scored four in the first inning. Harber, the son of LHP Chris Harber (Alta Vista Ritchies, Ottawa-Nepean Canadians, Orillia Majors) hit a two-run triple in the seventh, knocking in three of Niagara's four runs. Macdonald added a single.

    LHP Matt Ircandia (senior, Calgary, Alta.) took the loss, pitching 4 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on five hits and four walks. He struck out five. RP Ryan Virtue (senior, Stittsville, Ont.) pitched 1 1/3 innings allowing one run on one hit and three walks. Virtue struck out one.

    Wilson earned his first career MAAC Pitcher of the Week honor as named by the league office Tuesday. The junior hurler was also

    Wilson picked up his first win of the season against the Keydets, striking out a career high 12 batters. The junior scattered three hits over eight innings, allowing one run, while striking out the side in the first and sixth innings.

    Wilson is now 1-1 with a team-best 2.30 ERA. He tops on the squad with 20 strikeouts while holding the opposition to a team-low .140 batting average.

    In 2005, he appeared in 12 games, starting four. He struck out a sesaon-best five in a loss at Buffalo. Wilson also pitched for Greg Hamilton's Canadian National Youth Team.

  • RHP Kris Webber (junior, Langley, BC) continued his scoreless inning string, pitching five innings -- AGAIN -- in an 18-2 win for the 12th-ranked Central Missouri Mules as they beat the Mary Marauders before 100 fans at Crane Stadium in Warrensburg, Mo.
