BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Sports

, Last Updated: 1:19 PM ET

"Gosh darn, he hit that one on the face!"

"My gosh, he couldn't have hit that one any harder if he hit it off a tee."

"Oh my gosh he nearly took the infielder's head off."

That's a lot of gosh-ing, don't you think?

Nope, just people watching Josh Vander Hey hack, whack and turn fastballs into line drives.

Vander Hey was driving in 12 runs for the Texas Wesleyan Rams in one baseball hotbed where words like "dadgumit, gol' darn, sum-beach" and others are heard.

Meanwhile, Steven Condotta was putting on his own run-producing parade in another baseball state, as he knocked in 11 for the Florida Tech Panthers.

With numbers like that it was impossible to ignore the slugging of SS Condotta (senior, Mississauga, Ont.) and C Vander Hey (junior, Calgary, Alta.) as co-winners of our SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Players of the Week. They had similar weeks, both hitting .563 and usually left the bases cleared from their identical No. 3 spots in the batting order.

The weekly award, still roughly on time but don't look for the streak to continue (we get some HELP in the research department from a retired baseball fan), recognizing the best of the 638 Canadians playing south of the border.

The pair beat out the likes of C Yannick Bergeron (senior, Sherbrooke, Que.), of the St. Edward's Hilltoppers; SS Mark Charette (junior, Ottawa, Ont.), of the Shorter Hawks; SS David Cooper (junior, Edmonton, Alta.), of the Mount Olive Trojans and RHP Davis Desjarlais (freshman, Langley, BC), of the New Mexico Military Broncos.

How the week went for Condotta and the rest of the Florida Tech Panthers as he:

  • Singled in a 12-2 win over Merrimack before 120 fans at Seminick-Hall Field in Melbourne, Fla. RP Mike McFadden (senior, Toronto, Ont.) pitched a scoreless inning. He allowed two hits.

  • Knocked in six runs in a 14-2 romp over Merrimack before 121 fans. He hit a grand slam to left field in the second inning to put Florida Tech up 6-0; singled to left to boost the score to 7-0 and stole second and hit a scoring fly ball to centre to make the score 14-2.

  • Had three hits and drove in two runs in an 8-6 win against Merrimack before 113 fans. He doubled to right centre in the first to put the Panthers up 2-1; singled to left in the second; singled to right in the fourth and walked and stole second in the sixth. RP Brett Backman (junior, Whitby, Ont.) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the victory. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out two. Backman is now 2-0.

  • Knocked in a run in a 3-1 loss to the Tampa Spartans at the Tampa Field before 218 fans in Tampa, Fla. Backman had a scoreless outing, pitching 2/3 of an inning, walking one.

  • Was a perfect 3-for-3 in a 16-5 win over Bentley at Florida Tech in front of 115 fans at Seminick-Hall Field in Melbourne, Fla. Condotta doubled, knocked in two runs and swiped four bases. He singled and stole second and then third in the first inning; doubled down the right field line and scored for a 4-3 lead in the third inning; singled in a run to put the Panthers up 5-3 and stole second and then third in the fourth; hit a scoring fly ball in the sixth for a 10-4 lead and flied out to left to make it 15-6.

The smooth-fielding shortstop hit .563 (9-for-16) for the week with four doubles, a homer, 11 RBIs and six stolen bases.

"There's one guy I can never figure out why he hasn't been drafted," said his former roommate Jon Baksh (Mississaugta, Ont.), who was drafted in the seventh round by the Blue Jays in 2006.

As a freshman in 2004, Condotta hit .302 with six doubles and 12 RBIs, while stealing 11 bases.

In 2005, he hit .313 with 13 doubles and 20 RBIs, as he swiped 16 bases.

And in 2006 as a junior, Condotta batted .377 with 12 doubles, three triples, four homers and 29 RBIs.

Vander Hey hit .563 (9-for-16) for the week with two triples and 12 RBIs.

Vander Hey beat out a host of others with the same first name: Josh Brenn (freshman, Mississauga, Ont.), of the Lon Morris Bearcats; 3B Josh Craig (senior, Lombardy, Ont.), of the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers; RP Josh Herback-South (junior, Regina, Sask.), of the Cal-State Northridge Matadors; 2B Josh Mace (senior, Nelson, BC), of the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils and RP Josh Turner (sophomore, Spruce Grove, Alta.), of the Colby Trojans.
