BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Sports

, Last Updated: 7:01 PM ET

Often we get accused of favoring hitters.

Sometimes 12 hits or 10 RBIs in a week make it awful easy to overlook guys on the mound.

Not this week -- Week One of the 2007 -- our eighth season.

Two stood tall on the mound.

First, we go down to Texas were old Double D was mowing them down for the Galveston Whitecaps.

LHP Guillaume Dupont-Duguay pitched a no hitter as Galveston beat Lon Morris 5-0.

And staying in the Lone Star State Adam Zorzit was hard at work.

The letters A to Z encompass the alphabet, from start to finish.

And A-Z Adam Zorzit works from start to finish too. He pitched two complete games to register a pair of wins. for the Texas A@M International Dustdevils.

So, for their efforts Dupont-Duguay (sophomore,Trois-Rivieres, Que.) and Zorzit (sophomore, Woodbridge, Ont.) are our SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Players of the Week.

Our first week of the season is actually more than a week for some teams -- and the season hasn't even begun for others.

The weekly award, on time for a change but don't count on the streak continuing (unless we get some help in the research department), recognizes the best of the 577 Canadians playing south of the border.

The pair beat out the likes of SS Steve Condotta (junior, Mississauga, Ont.), of the Florida Tech Panthers; RHP Jeff Davis (senior, Langley, BC), of the Harding Bison; CF J.P. LaPointe (junior, Montreal, Que.), of the Bethany Bruins; SS Brandon Magierowski (senior, Lethbridge, Alta.), of the Louisiana State Shreveport Pilots; CF Marc Noble (senior, Vancouver, BC), of the Armstrong Atlantic Pirates and DH Justin Pennell (junior Toronto, Ont.), of the Ouachita Baptist Tigers.

How the week went for Dupont-Duguay and the other Whitecaps:

  • Dupont-Duguay took the loss in a 3-2 defeat to Tempe at Temple, Tx. He allowed three runs.

  • Dupont-Duguay tossed his no hitter as Galveston blanked Lon Morris 5-0 at Jacksonville, Tx. Dupont-Duguay allowed only one walk and had nine strikeouts. Only his third-inning walk prevented him from having a perfect game. His fastball was clocked in the 90s.

"I didn't think at all of the chance for perfect game (in the third), but in the fifth or in sixth, it was my goal to get the no-hitter," Dupont-Duguay told reporters. "I kept the ball. It is my second season here and it is the first no-hitter."

  • Dupont-Duguay pitched Galveston to a 2-1 win over Weatherford at Galveston, Tx. He allowed four hits and that three walks. Dupont-Duguay struck out nine giving him 25 strikeouts in 19 innings.

  • RHP Greg Doyle (sophomore, Nanaimo, BC) pitched Galveston to a 6-3 win over Weatherford in the nitecap.

Dupont-Duguay was already getting attention before his no-no. He received an offer to pitch at Mississippi. He is specializing in physiotherapy. He was supposed to start the season as the Whitecaps No. 2 starter, but has moved into the role of the ace.

Last season, his second in the Quebec Elite League, pitching for Three-Rivers Eagles, Dupont-Duguay pitched 35 1/3 innings going 5-1 with a 2.58 ERA.

In 2005, he was 10-2 for the Three-Rivers.

In 2004, with the Quebec Wings, he had six victories.

And how the week went for Zorzit:

  • As he had to grind out a complete-game three-hitter in his first outing for a 5-1 win against the Tarleton Texans in front of 118 fans at Cecil Ballow Field in Stephenville Tx. Zorzit held Tarleton scoreless until the sixth when they scored a single run to make it 5-1. He took a 2-0 lead into the fifth. He struck out a pair and did not walk a man. After losing the opener, Zorzit pitched TAMIU to its first win in the program's history.

  • Again Zorzit went A-to-Z in an 11-3 win over the Texas Steers in front of 100 fans at Tyler, Tx. Texas A@M International led 5-2 after five innings and put the game away with five in the top of the seventh. Zorzit allowed eight hits and three runs. Again he did not walk a man and he fanned seven.

Zorzit, a former Richmond Hill Phoenix, combined to allow four runs in 14 innings for a 2.57 earned run average. He didn't walk a man and struck out nine.

Since the 5-foot-11 Zorzit, a transfer student from Garrett, won the first game in school history he'll move to the front of the record books -- the front of the line for once in his line.
