Hockin, Cooper dominate
Players of the Week, Week 12
By BOB ELLIOTT -- Toronto Sun
Bookmark and Share

David Cooper.
First thing you should know about Mount Olive is that is the name a bit of a misnomer. At least on the ball field.

The Mount Olive Trojans don’t extend any olive branches. They come out swinging from the hip and deal from over the top.

The Trojans have won 18 of 19 games including running the table in the Carolinas-Virginia conference tourney.
SS David Cooper has been a key cog in the Mount Olive success this season and was named to the all-tournament team.

While Canucks were enjoying success at the North Carolina school, the same was true to the west and to the north with the Jamestown Jimmies, long a bastion for Canadian talent.

RHP Greg Hockin had a two-win week heading an outstanding run by western Canadian arms for the North Dakota school.

For their efforts Hockin (sophomore, Neepawa, Man.) and Cooper (sophomore, Edmonton, Alta.) are our SLAM!
Canadian Baseball College Players of the Week.

The weekly award, however late it is, recognizes the best of the 706 Canadians playing south of the border. They beat out the likes of RHP Doug Grant (junior, Vancouver, BC), of the British Columbia Thunderbirds; Steele Lewis (freshman, Essex, Ont.), of the Kellogg Bruins; Colin Moro (junior, Calgary, Alta.), of the LSU-Shreveport Pilots; Matt Spargalo (senior, McGregor, Ont.), of the Concordia-Michigan Cardinals and CF Skyler Stromsmoe (junior, Etzikom, Alta.) of the Southern Arkansas Muleriders.

How the week went for Hockin and the rest of the Jimmies:

* RP Nolan Mitchell (senior, Dauphin, Man.) pitched 1/3 of an inning as Jamestown fell 10-4 to the Dakota State Trojans. Mitchell allowed two runs on two hits and two walks.

* Hockin pitched a one-hit, 3-0 win over Dakota State. It was a 1-0 game until the sixth. Hockin walked one and struck out eight. It was the first of three shutouts by a former Malaspina pitcher. Besides putting down all the right fingers, C Scott Arthurs (junior, Surrey, BC) had a hit.

* LHP Graham Campbell (sophomore, Victoria, BC) pitched a nine-inning, two-hitter in a 7-0 blanking of North Dakota. Campbell struck out four. Arthurs singled and knocked in a run.

* RHP Craig Talbot (senior, Victoria, BC) then tossed a four hitter as Jamestown blanked North Dakota 3-0. He struck out one.

* RHP Derek Schlapbach (junior, Kelowna, BC) took the loss in a 3-1 loss to Dickinson State Blue Hawks at the Southside Park in Dickinson, ND. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks, as he fanned four. Arthurs added a single.

* Hockin pitched a complete game as the Jimmies beat the Dickinson State 8-1. Hockin gave up one run on five hits, while fanning seven. PH Bryan Allen (junior, Calgary, Alta.) contributed a single.

So, for the week Hockin allowed one run -- earned -- in 16 innings as he pitched two complete games to go 2-0 for a 0.56 ERA. He walked only one and struck out 15.

Hockin is only the sixth Manitoba player to win the award joining RHP Josh Sawatzky (Altoona), of the Niagara Purple Eagles, a winner in Week 12 of 2004; Keith Glawson (Brandon), of the Campbellsville Tigers, in Week 10 of 2004; RHP Curtis Morrison (Brandon), of the Armstrong Atlantic Pirates, in Week 3 in 2003; Clark Andres (San Clara), of the Mayville State Comets in Week 18 in 2002 and C Bryan Swaenepoel (Souris) of the Valley City State Vikings in Week 13 of 2001.

And how the week was for Cooper and the rest of his Trojans teammates as he:

* Went 3-for-6 and three RBIs as 29th-ranked, 3rd-seeded Mount Olive beat 6th-seeded Pfeiffer 15-7 at Nixon Field in Wilson NC to open the Carolinas-Virginia conference tourney.

* Tripled and knocked in a run in a 10-5 win over 2nd-seeded Erskine before 245 fans at Fleming Stadium in Wilson. Cooper's RBI-triple capped a three-run fourth. Cooper ranks second in the nation in triples per game. CF Kyle Curtis (junior, Edmonton, Alta.) also knocked in a run. The game was suspended in the eighth due to lightning and rain.

* Knocked in a pair of runs with a double and stole a base in an 11-5 win over Pfeiffer before 255 fans. While he was hitless in the first two games, Curtis went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Cooper singled home a pair of runs to close out the scoring in the seventh.

* Went 3-for-6 as Mount Olive pounded the 4th-seeded Limestone Saints 16-1 in the CVAC tourney final before 276 fans, Cooper knocked in two runs. Curtis was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs. The Trojans struck for four runs in the top of the fifth on two-run singles the first by Curtis with two out in the inning. Mount Olive extended the lead to double digits with a four-run seventh as Curtis doubled to bring in a run. Two more scored on Cooper's single to left. Curtis' sky-high po landed in the middle of four Limestone fielders in shallow right-center and Cooper added a run-scoring single to make the score 15-1.

With the win -- Mount Olive’s 18th in the previous 19 games -- the Trojans earn an automatic bid to the South Atlantic Regional in the 2006 NCAA Division II championship. Cooper was selected to the All-Tournament team. Cooper won other awards as he was named:

* To the all-conference first team. He ranks second in the nation with 11 triples and 12th in the nation with 38 stolen bases. He also ranks among the top 25 in runs scored. Cooper had a .399 average when the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference awards were announced at Wilson, N.C., site of the CVAC Tournament.

* CVAC Player of the Week for the final week of the regular. Cooper hit .522 with three triples in six games to help the Trojans post a 5-1 mark. Cooper, who ranks second in the nation in triples per game, hit a key two-out triple in the eighth inning of the Trojans' 14-10 win over Limestone Saturday in the regular season finale to clinch sole possession of third place.

As the final week of the regular season finished Cooper was:

* A Perfect 4-for-4 in a 14-10 win over Limestone at Gaffney, SC. Cooper tripled and swiped a base. He hit his two-run triple with two outs in the top of the eighth as Mount Olive finished in sole possession of third place in the CVAC standings. The steal was the 38th of the season for Cooper, who ranks eighth in the nation in stolen bases per game.

* Tripled and doubled in a 2-1 win over Limestone, the triple leading to the second run. The Trojans added a run in the top of the fifth when Cooper hit his 10th triple of the season and scored on fly ball to extend the lead to 2-0.

* Doubled in a run as Mount Olive gave up four runs in the bottom of the ninth to lose 6-5. Curtis singled and stole a base.

Letter of the Week
: Again, I love the exposure you give our game especially on the amateur side but I am not getting these college weekly POTW's in the fall for the spring season. As interested as I am, about our college guys south of the border, I will not read about seven-month old news.
Am I missing something?

Answer: We figure later is better than not at all. Should we acknowledge the first 11 weeks and ignore the players who won all-conference honours? Once again any help would be appreciated scouring the college box scores. When we started five years ago not everyone had such detail on the web sites, now most have everything. Plus, we are down a member of our crack staff. Students and players need not apply but anyone who is retired and enjoys the computer can drop us a line.

What role will Prince Fielder have five years from now?
  Still an All-Star
  Designated hitter
  In the minor leagues
  Retired
