There used to be the one-word and two-word Roughriders.
The one-word Roughriders call Regina home and are known as the Saskatchewan Rougriders of the CFL.
The two-word Rough Riders used to be in Ottawa and was a cradle of quarterbacks: Russ Jackson, Ron Lancaster, Tom Clements and Condrege Holloway, whom Jim Fanning always called the best shortstop the Montreal Expos ever drafted -- he never signed.
South of the border, The Rough Riders was the name bestowed by the American press on the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the Spanish-American War and they eventually became known as Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders.
Down in Missouri, there is a right-hander who was giving opposing teams a rough ride.
RHP Erick Nadon (freshman, Longueuil, Que.) had a two-win week for the Crowder Roughriders and for that he is out SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Players of the Week.
Nadon shares the honour with 1B Johnny Yiu (senior, Surrey, BC) of the British Columbia Thunderbirds. Yiu hit .571 (8-for-14) as UBC went 5-0, including a win over the Division I Washington Huskies.
The weekly award, however late it is, recognizes the best of the 705 Canadians playing south of the border.
