When Cheryl Tiegs was a Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover girl in 1978 she was perfect.
That was according to the top modelling agencies which paid her top dollar.
When Jordan Tiegs took the mound against Carl Sandburg he was as close to perfect as you can get.
That's according to the final linescore.
The lefty walked one man as he pitched a perfect game 10-0 win for the Saulk Valley Skyhawks at Dixon Ill.
Cheryl Tiegs was unforgettable in her SI cover shoot and Jordan Tiegs was unforgettable on this day.
For his efforts, Tiegs (freshman, Woodstock, Ont.) is our SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week.
He shares the honour with RF Phil Carey (freshman, London, Ont.), of the Winthrop Eagles, who was 5-for-10 and played a role in each of Winthrop's wins over the Liberty Flames.
The weekly award, however late it is, recognizes the best of the 704 Canadians playing south of the border.
And yes, we surpassed the 700 level and ol' No. 700, as the saying goes? That honour belongs to OF Mike Kicia (sophomore, Edmonton, Alta.), of the Mount Olive Trojans.
Carey and Tiegs beat out the likes of: RF_Jonathan Baksh (junior, Mississauga, Ont.), the Florida Tech Panthers; LF Tyler Belanger (senior, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), of the Graceland Yellow Jackets; 2B Dustin Bissonette (senior, Prince George, BC), of the LSU-Shreveport Pilots; LHP_Renaud Charon-Catellier (freshman, Montreal-North, Que.), of the Seminole State Trojans; CF Kyle Curtis (junior, Edmonton, Alta.), Mount Olive Trojans and RHP Doug Grant (junior, Vancouver, BC), of the British Columbia Thunderbirds.
How the week went for Carey and the rest of the Winthrop Eagles, as he:
Singled twice and knocked in two runs in a 13-1 win over Liberty at the Winthrop Ballpark before 604 fans in Rock Hill, SC. Carey hit a two-run single to right in the fourth to put the Eagles up 6-0 and he singled again in the sixth.
Singled and knocked in a run in an 8-7 win over Liberty before 642 fans as the Eagles rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Trailing 7-4, Winthrop began the inning by going single, walk, double to make it a one-run game. After a strike out, a single, and a run-scoring ground ball which tied the game, Carey came up and singled to centre, bringing home the winning run. Carey entered the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth and bounced out.
Homered and singled in a 10-8 win over Liberty before 711 fans. With two out in the sixth, Carey homered to right, cutting the Liberty lead to 5-3 and as the second hitter of the eighth kept the line moving with a single. Winthrop won with a six-run eighth.
On the week, Carey hit .500 (5-for-10). Plenty of Canadians hit that high, but very few Canuck freshman at four-year schools managed to do so and we're not sure if any hit their first homer.
Carey played for the Canadian Junior National Team and coach Greg Hamilton in 2004-05, as well as the Ontario Youth Team for coach Mike Lumley.
He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 25th round of 2005 by scout Kevin Briand.
Winthrop has always been away from home for Canadians over the years like Chris Leroux (Mississauga, Ont.), Mike McFadden (Richmond Hill, Ont.), Craig Kilshaw (Victoria, BC), Ryan Chenard (Port Alberni, BC), Mark Schmidt (Waterloo, Ont.), Conrad Funk (Waldeck, Sask.), Jeff Reeves (Peterborough, Ont.), Geoff Cheek (Kanata, Ont.), Jeremy Herauf (Regina, Sask.) and Jordan Webb (Courtenay, BC).
How the week went for Tiegs and the rest of the Skyhawks as they:
Opened with a 10-4 loss to South Suburban as Jared Wolf (freshman, St. Thomas, Ont.) hit a seventh-inning single at South Holland, Ill.
Lost 11-1 to South Suburban as Wolf hit a solo homer in the fourth.
Beat Carl Sandburg 5-1 at Dixon, Ill. as RHP Andrew Clapdorp (sophomore, Otterville, Ont.) pitched a complete game win. Clapdorp allowed one uearned run on two hits, three walks and a hit batter. He struck out thre and with the victory he evened his record at 1-1.
Knocked off Carl Sandburg 10-0 on the Tiegs no hitter. Tiegs had three ground ball outs, one fly ball out, and 10 strikeouts -- four looking -- an indication of how much his ball was moving. It was a 2-0 score until the fourth.
He walked the lead-off man in the third, who stole second and was cut down trying to score (3-1-2) at the plate after Tiegs made an error on a routine play when he was covering first base on a ground ball. Tiegs is now 1-2.
