Jimmy Van O, goes HR, HR, HR, HR
Player of the Week, Week Six Honours
By BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Sports

Jimmy Van Ostrand.

Nothing upsets a Washington State player than to ask him how the Huskies are doing.

Conversely nothing bothers a Washington player to ask him how the Cougars are faring.

It was a Washington State Cougars uniform that sweet-swinging John Olerud wore for three seasons on his way to he majors.

And the Washington Huskies ...

Well, you might get them going if you ask "so ... how did you guys handle Jimmy Van Ostrand?"

Not well.

That's like saying Team USA was stunned in an 8-6 loss to Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic.

Van Ostrand was a one-man wrecking crew for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs as he knocked in 10 runs in a two-game series against the 19th-ranked Huskies. His first two-homer game came against Tim Linceum, who is expected to be a first or second-round draft pick next month.

With an output like that, Van Ostrand is our no-doubt winner as SLAM! Canadian Baseball All-Canadian College Player of the Week.

The weekly award, however late it is, recognizes the best of the 698 Canadians playing college ball south of the border.

Jimmy VO beat out the likes of 2B Marc Besteman (junior, Bradford, Ont.), of the Northern Illinois Huskies; 2B Mark Capone (senior, Etobicoke, Ont.), of the British Columbia Thunderbirds; RP Chris Kissock (sophomore, Fruitvale, BC), of the Lewis-Clark Warriors; 3B Ian Kowalchuk (senior, St. Catharines, Ont.), of the South Carolina-Aiken Pacers; CF Adwin Springer (junior, Toronto, Ont.), of the Wayne State Warriors; LHP Fraser Robinson (junior, North Gower, Ont.), of the Northwestern State Demons and C Jeff Vickers (sophomore, Nanaimo, BC), of the Southern Idaho Golden Eagles.

All Van Ostrand did was bat .500 (10-for-20) with four homers and 12 RBIs.
