Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates pitcher Matt Nalutka (pictured), along with Chris Emanuele, of the Northeastern Huskies, were named co-winners of the SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week honours. (File Photo)

Usually our honoured players are those who have had a great week as the player of the week name would imply.

Yet, this week, we honour two players who not only had great weeks, but memorable seasons.

No, make it historic seasons.

No one has done what these two accomplished.

Like Chris Emanuele, of the Northeastern Huskies. His lead-off double against the Harvard Crimson wasn't any big deal ... except for the fact it extended his personal consecutive-game hitting streak to 18 games.

That broke the school's old mark held by Preston Carroll, who hit in 17 straight for the 1980 Huskies. They have been playing baseball for 84 years at Northeastern and no one has a longer hitting streak than Emanuele.

Like RP Matt Nalutka, of the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates.

Nalutka had two scoreless innings for Armstrong Atlantic against North Carolina-Pembroke, giving him 24 scoreless innings on the season, with six games remaining.

The NCAA does not keep records on consecutive scoreless appearances at any level, but research and queries to SIDs by Armstrong State, did not reveal a player with a longer streak.

Our research shows Neil Jamison, of Long Beach State Dirtbags had an 0.00 ERA, giving up two unearned runs in 2005, as the team's closer. Long Beach's consecutive scoreless innings streak is 33 innings by

Rocky Biddle in 1995.

So, centre fielder Emanuele (junior, Mississauga, Ont.) closer Nalutka (junior, Langley, BC) and are named co-winners of the SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week honours.

The award, however belated, recognizes the best of the 653 Canadians playing south of the border.

The pair beat out the likes of C Steve Bell-Irving (sophomore, Vancouver, BC), of the British Columbia Thunderbirds; 3B Matthieu Bergeron (junior, St. Celestin, Que.), of the Binghampton Bearcats; RHP Dustin Bolton (senior, Calgary, Alta.) of the Central Missouri State Mules; LHP Morgan Carlile (freshman, Summerside, PEI), of the Campbellsville Tigers; RHP Jason Greening (freshman, Windsor, Ont.), of the Grand Rapids Raiders; Mike Roeder (freshman, Waterloo, Ont.), of the Kaskaskia Blue Devils and RF Jeff Tobin (junior, Pickering, Ont.), of the UBC Thunderbirds.

How the week that was went for Emanuele and the rest of the Northeastern Huskies ...

  • Emanuele had a pair of hits, including a double, in a 5-1 win over the Baltimore County Retrievers at The Baseball Factory Field in Baltimore, Md. It was the 15th consecutive game Emanule had recorded a hit. 1B Miguel Paquette (senior, Casselman, Ont.) had two hits, including a double, for the Huskies, while SS Arman Sidhu (junior, Mississauga, Ont.) singled.

  • Emanuele had three hits and stole a base in a 6-1 win over Baltimore County. Emanuele led off with a single to stretch his hitting streak to 16 games and Sidhu followed with a double in the three-run first. RHP Devin Monds (senior, Ottawa, Ont.) pitched a complete game allowing three hits, as he walked three and struck out four. Monds, now 2-4, earned his first win since Feb. 28, when he shut out Seton Hall over eight innings in a 5-0 Huskies victory. Monds is a former SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week. Sidhu had two doubles on the day.

  • Emanuele singled, increasing his hitting streak to 17 games, matching the school record, and also stole a base in a 12-7 win over UMBC. Sidhu and Paquette each singled and drove in a pair of runs. Sidhu also stole a base.

  • Emanuele broke the record in his next game with a leadoff double, his ninth, in 10-3 win over the Harvard Crimson before 219 fans at O'Donnell Field in Cambridge, Mass. The Husky centre fielder started the season on a 13-game hitting streak, has a hit in 31 of NU's 36 games this season. Emanuele added the Huskies' fifth run with a scoring fly ball to right in the three-run eighth and Sidhu capped the inning with an RBI double, his 14th, to the gap in left centre to bring home Lyon. Northeastern received six scoreless innings from Kris Dabrowiecki (freshman, Toronto, Ont.). Dabrowiecki allowed three hits, walking none and striking out two. Paquette added a his 10th double.

The victory was head coach Neil McPhee's 500th career win. A Northeastern Hall of Famer, inducted in 1980, McPhee has produced three America East titles and three NCAA appearances. He has coached teams to 25 or more wins in a season 12 times including in each of the last three seasons. He is also a two-time America East Coach of the Year, winning the honour in 1991 and 1994.

Northeastern has had varsity baseball since 1921 and has competed in the America East Conference since 1990. Carlos Pena, of the Detroit Tigers is probably their most notable alumnus after going 10th overall in 1998. RHP Jordan Thomson (Ottawa, Ont.) was selected in the 17th round after being named America East Pitcher of the Year in 2004.

Also, catcher Luke Carlin (Aylmer, Que.) was taken in the 10th round of the 2002 draft and is currently with Double-A Mobile Bay Bears in the San Diego Padres system.

And how the week went for Nalutka and the rest of the Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates ...

  • Nalutka recorded his 10th save to tie the school record for saves as the 20th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic held off the North Carolina-Pembroke Braves 7-6 in front of 214 fans at Braves Field in Pembroke, N.C. Nalutka allowed one hit as the Pirates won their 30th game. C Sean Hotzak (sophomore, North Vancouver, BC) went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

  • Hotzak went 3-for-4 again in an 8-5 win over UNC Pembroke before 189 fans. 2B Rob Recuenco (sophomore, Vancouver, BC) had two hits and swiped a base. RP Leon Boyd (senior, White Rock, BC) pitched two innings allowing two hits and two runs, while striking out two.

  • Hotzak went 2-for-3 and singled in a run in a 6-3 loss to Pembroke in front of 167 fans. Nalutka retired the final two outs.

Nalutka, also was a SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Player of the Week in Week 10, has now hurled 23 consecutive scoreless appearances and has gone the entire 2005 season to date, without giving up a run. His impressive season stats read: 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 10 saves. 24 innings pitched, 12 hits, zero runs, zero earned runs, six walks and 37 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting .145 against him and he is striking out 13.88 batters per nine innings.

Toughest tests during his current streak came against the Columbus State Cougars: in a 7-3 win against the Cougars, Nalutka entered the ninth in a non-save situation and loaded the bases with a hit and two walks, but pitched out of the bases-loaded, none-out jam with a strikeout and two pop outs to keep the streak intact.

Nalutka entered in the ninth with the game tied, 7-7, and hurled a season-long three shutout innings, picking up the win in the bottom of the 11th when the Pirates scored on a homer for an 8-7 win.

Nalutka could break the school record for consecutive scoreless innings (30 innings Mark Ewing in 1992), if not this season, then perhaps next season, in his senior year.

Hotzak was named Peach Belt Player of the Week, hitting .727 (8-for-11) in three games for the No. 20-ranked Pirates in a series win at UNC Pembroke. He had multiple hits in each of the three games, going 3-for-4 twice. He had a homer and a double in game one and RBIs in each of the next two and also scored three runs. For the week, Hotzak had a 1.182 slugging percentage and .750 on-base percentage.

Hotzak is hitting .356 on the year with three home runs and 29 RBIs and ranks second on the squad with a .512 slugging percentage. He leads the Pirates in doubles with 14 and ranks among the PBC leaders in that category.

Hotzak is the third AASU player to earn PBC Player of the Week honours.
