Smith, Randall have handle
Players of the Week, Week 11
By BOB ELLIOTT -- For SLAM! Sports

Time was when 10 hits was a good month for some hitters.

Well, in this edition we have plenty of hitters who had 10 hits in a week.

LF Kern Watts of the Evansville Purple Aces and 3B Devery Van De Keere, of the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns each were 10-for-17 (.588) at the plate.

There was Tim Smith, who fared better than Watts and Van De Keere. Smith had 10 hits in fewer at-bats, going 10-for-15 (.667).

And then there was infielder Justin Randall, of the Ashland Eagles. All he did was pick up 17 hits in 24 at-bats -- for a very good month, or week.

We had Watts (junior, Brampton, Ont.) and Van De Keere (junior, Barrhead, Alta.) pegged as co-winners until George Farelli of our crack research staff turned in Randall’s remarkable week.

For their efforts Smith(sophomore, Toronto, Ont.) and Randall (junior, Sarnia, Ont.) share our SLAM! Canadian Baseball College Players of the Week honours, no matter how belated.

The weekly award, however late it is, recognizes the best of the 706 Canadians playing south of the border.
