Reliever Ryan Jenson (Langley, B.C.) is eligible for the June draft.
Yet, that didn't stop him from mowing down players selected in previous drafts and free-agent signs from Latin America as Team Canada opened with a 7-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Jenson, of the Langley Blaze, pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth for the National Junior Team as Canada began its fall tour. Canada qualified for the World Junior championships by earning a bronze medal last month in Mexico.
However, a new year, means a new team and tryouts are proceeding, as they say about court cases.
Mehdi Djebbar (Montreal, Que.) also pitched two scoreless innings walking one and striking out three.
Four Canadian pitchers each pitched a pair of innings. Starter RHP Drew Parker (Surrey, B.C.) started for Canada as Cleveland scored in the first and second, initially on two walks and a passed ball in the top of the first and in the second on three straight two-out singles and one of five errors by Canada. Parker struck out three, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks.
Cleveland was soon up 6-0 lead by the eighth inning.
Tyler Tamayose (Lethbridge, Alta.) singled in the bottom of the ninth, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Olivier Bertrand (Ste-Adele, Que.) for Canada,s lone run.
Kyle Orr (Victoria, B.C.), Shayne Wilson (Surrey, B.C.) and Kyle Gilligan (Toronto, Ont.) also had hits for Canada.
LHP Justin Robinson (Langley, B.C.) allowed two earned runs on three hits, while Zack Breault (Amherstburg, Ont.) pitched a hitless ninth.
Nick Weglarz (Stevensville Ont.), who was on loan for the Indians, playing for Team Canada in Mexico, played right field for the Indians. Weglarz was hitless in five at-bats.
