Kris Klassen (Leamington, Ont.) has been the offensive hero for the
OUA-leading Guelph Gryphons. Not only is he riding a six-game, hitting streak
to open the season, this week he hit a sizzling .467 (7-for-15).
Klassen also chipped in with six RBIs, five steals and six walks.
His OBP for the week: .619 (13-for-21).
Guelph has been off to an incredibly hot start, receiving solid
pitching and strong offensive performances from Klassen and the rest of the Gryphons.
This past week also featured numerous dominating pitching performance,
some coming from continual OUA powerhouses, others as breakout performances.
For his efforts Klassen was named Week 2 winner as the SLAM!
Canadian University Player of the Week. Klassen was a winner in Week 2 of 2003.
A horde of strike machines all received consideration this week,
but Klassen's week was just too much to pass up. The others:
Alex Hawley (Mississauga, Ont.), Wes Koch (Waterloo, Ont.), Andrew
Pierce (Burlington, Ont.), Rylan Pranger (Guelph, Ont.), all had
strong games this week.
Hawley threw a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts
as Guelph beat the Toronto Varsity Blues.
Koch whiffed nine in a Waterloo victory over OUA leader Guelph.
Pranger, for the Brock Badgers, and Guelph's Pierce both
threw eight scoreless innings in their respective wins.
