Cheryl Weglarz was at the Marshville Heritage Festival in Wainfleet Ont. on the weekend.

While attending the craft show, Cheryl bought two Canadian scarfs for when her son Nick Weglarz when he returns home from his trip.

Cheryl mentioned to the lady that her son played for the Canadian national junior team.

The clerk replied: "oh he must be a great hockey player."

Nick Weglarz (Stevensville, Ont.) was the top high school selected in the June amateur Major League Baseball draft in June and helped get Canada rolling in a 6-1 must-win game over Mexico in Villahermosa, Mex.

Weglarz hit a long homerun in the top of the second that put Canada ahead for good as it cruised to victory.

After signing with the Cleveland Indians, Weglarz hit .231 with 11 doubles, two homers and 13 RBIs in 41 games with the Single-A Burlington Indians. Despite his pro status, he is still young enough to play for the youth team.

Renaud Caron Catellier (Montreal-Nord, Que.) picked up the win thanks to six scoreless innings, as he allowed four hits.

Sheldon McDonald (Spruce Grove, Alta.) threw two scoreless innings in relief while Drew Parker (Surrey, BC) allowed one run in the bottom of the ninth.

Canada wound up with a split on the day, committing six errors on the way to a 5-1 loss to the Team USA.

Right-hander Mark James (Whitby, Ont.), also a June draft and on loan from the Milwaukee Brewers, was charged with the loss, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings, as he struck out nine.

Canada is now 2-2 and next plays Puerto Rico.
