B.C. wins pair
Saskatchewan unbeaten at Canada Cup

Jordan Padrinao.

It was very simple for British Columbia.

All they had to do was knock off Alberta -- that would be the host Alberta team -- at the Canada Cup in Medicine Hat, Alta. A win would guarantee top spot in Pool A and put British Columbia against Pool B winner Saskatchewan in the semi-final.

Coach Bill Green’s team was ready, ah you could say that that the New York Yankees have money.

B.C. scored eight times in the first and it went like this as B.C. sent 12 hitters to the plate on the way to a 12-7 win over Alberta in front of 700 fans at the Athletic Park.

CF Tyson Gillies started matter with a single to right field, then LF Kevin Sawka reached on a throwing error, allowing Gillies to score. 2B Mark Ellis singled to left, DH Kyle Orr singled to right field and 3B Shayne Willson reached on an error as Sawka scored. After a hit batter, 1B Ian MacMaster hit a scoring fly ball. The inning was capped by two-run doubles from CF Chase Larrson and Sawka.

Jordan Padrinao worked 4 2/3 innings allowing five hits and five runs, while walking one and striking out four.

C Cody Springer, with two doubles, and Larrson, with two doubles, and Gillies led B.C. with three hits apiece, while SS David Narodowski added a hit.

DH Tyler Tamayose had three hits, including a double and three RBIs for Alberta. SS Jesse Sawyer and 3B Jesse Beley had two hits and knocked in a run.

RF Richard Saarela doubled and knocked in a run, while CF Sheldon McDonald drove in a run. 2B Kerry Boon and LF Garrett Regan each chipped in with a hit.

British Columbia scored its second win of the day despite trailing Quebec 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth when the bat bags were finally unpacked. 2B Ellis homered to left field leading off the inning and RF Orr followed by hitting the next pitch for a homer to right. B.C. wasn’t done there as 3B Willson walked and stole second. After a Quebec error, Larrson singled down the left field line to score a pair and DH Padrinao wrapped things up with an RBI double to left centre.

The five-run outburst led the way to an 8-2 B.C. win over Quebec. Justin Robinson went the distance allowing two hits and two runs, while walking four and fanning eight.

Ellis had three hits, a double and a triple besides the homer, while Orr had a pair and knocked in two, as Willson drove in a pair and stole a base. LF Kevin Sawka added a double and swiped a base.

Christian Villeneuve singled in a run for Quebec, while 3B Luis Argumedes singled and CF Selvin Ocon knocked in a run.

Alberta will meet Ontario in the other semi-final as Ontario’s Colin Buckborough moved Ontario to a 3-1 record with a complete-game, three-hit shut out over Manitoba before 250 fans. Buckborough walked one and fanned five, facing two batters over the minimum.

1B Steve Anderson hit a homer, singled twice and knocked in a pair of runs, as did RF Leslie Williams, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Anderson homered with one out, scoring Samie Starr, who had led off the inning with a single. Jon Waltenbury and Matt McCarney followed with singled to left field; J Waltenbury advanced to second. C Chris Dennis singled in a run, as did Williams. The final two runs scored on balls to the screen.

Dennis had two hits and knocked in three runs, while McCarney doubled and singled, while 3B Brian Ivan also singled.

2B Mike Mutcheson and LF Reid McLeod each singled for Manitoba, while SS Mitch Olson doubled.

And in other games ...

_ CF Tyler Delaney put one one of the best hitting displays of the tournament as he went 5-for-5 in Nova Scotia’s 11-9 win over Newfoundland at the Kinsmen Complex. Delaney had a double, four singles and drove in a pair of runs. His double broke a 6-6 tie in the fourth inning and set Nova Scotia on its way.

2B Shain Beaudreau wasn’t too shabby either as he drove in five runs, with a triple and a single. And Beaudreau gained the win in relief, pitching four innings, allowing seven hits and three ruuns, while striking out eight.

Nova Scotia pounded out 14 hits, including three, including a triple, from SS Dan Comeau, who knocked in a pair of runs and two hits from LF John Walker.

C Justin Stephens singled and knocked in a run, while 1B Chris Denney doubled.

LF Blair Pennell hung up his own five spot for Newfoundland in his RBI column, thanks to a grand slam in Newfoundland’s six-run second and a sixth-inning single. 1B Murray Bavis also singled and doubled, while A.J. Whiffen and 3B Larry Gray each had two hits and drove in a run.

_ SS Chris Cole hit a one-out doubled to left in the bottom of the seventh and one out later scored on a throwing error as New Brunswick edged Prince Edward Island 3-2 before 178 fans at Jeffery's Park.

Stewart Langille pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the win, in relief of Andrew Lewis. Cole had three hits in all, while DH Willi Stymiest and 1B Dennis Graham each singled and drove in a run. C Chuck Schembri had a pair of hits.

C Brandon McInnis singled and knocked in two runs, while 3B Jeremy Doucette added a single for the two hits PEI managed.

_ C Tyler Grubb went 3-for-3, knocking in a run and scored once to allow Saskatchewan to whomp Newfoundland 11-1 and finish the round-robin format atop Pool B with a 4-0 mark.

LF Kevin Andal tripled and knocked in a run, while RF Jurri Darby had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in three runs. SS Karsten Strelioff had a pair of hits to knock in two runs, while CF Brennan Llffman doubled in a run.

Sean Carrick pitched three innings, allowing one run for the win.

LF Blair Pennell and SS Justin Downey each singled for Newfoundland.

Do you think Jesse Litsch will bounce back and pitch for the Blue Jays again?
  Yes, the bullpen needs help
No, his injury was too severe
  I don't want him back
