Tara the “hero cat” will toss the first pitch at a minor league baseball game next week in Bakersfield, Calif.

The Class A Bakersfield Blaze will honour Tara – and her family, of course – after the feline fended off a neighbourhood dog that began attacking four-year-old Jeremy Triantafilo.

Surveillance videos caught Triantafilo’s cat, Tara, come out of nowhere to scare away the dog before it could inflict too much damage.

Bakersfiled Now reports that the cat’s family will help the pet throw out the pitch.

Video of Tara’s rescue has garnered more than 7 million views on YouTube since the incident earlier this week.

Fans of the Central California club are being asked to bring unused pet toys and pet food to be provided to local animal charities and shelters.

According to the local TV station 23ABC Bakersfield, the boy’s mother, Erika Triantafilo, said her son needed a few stitches but was doing fine.

She said the dog belonged to a neighbour and is under observation.
