Navratilova, Raymond move into quarterfinals
ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Martina Navratilova and Lisa Raymond moved into the Olympic quarterfinals without hitting a shot Wednesday when Amelie Mauresmo and Mary Pierce of France withdrew from the doubles tournament.
Mauresmo said she couldn't play because she broke out with a rash from a skin allergy during a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 16 Chanda Rubin of the United States earlier Wednesday.
"It's a nice surprise," Raymond said. "Of course, it's not something you wish on anybody, but it makes it easier on us, for sure. It would have been a very difficult match."
Navratilova is playing in her first Olympics at age 47.
"Hopefully, Martina and I will be able to win a medal for the U.S. women," Raymond said.
All the American women have been knocked out in singles play. In addition to Rubin's loss, defending champion Venus Williams was upset by Pierce and Raymond was eliminated by Australian Alicia Molik.
