Jana Salat played on Canada's fifth place team at the 2000 Olympics but says this year's squad is better equipped to win. "We have a lot of experience," said Salat a business student at McGill University in Montreal, who has already earned a degree in biochemistry. "The oldest players have been around a long time and our team chemistry is good. We're pretty balanced on offence and defence and we actually have a lot of creativity on offence."
Salat made her first big international impact at the 1999 world junior championships in Sicily where she led Canada to the silver medal and was named the tournament's most valuable player. She immigrated with her family to Edmonton as a youngster and began playing with the Edmonton Tsunami water polo club. Then she joined the Calgary Renegades and helped them to consecutive silver medals at the senior national championships. Her father played for the Slovakian national team.
