Carol Montgomery has enjoyed a distinguished career in both triathlon and track and field. She was Canada's triathlon and duathlon athlete of the year in 1993; she won silver and bronze respectively in the 5,000 and 10,000 metre runs at the 1995 Pan Am Games and is a three-time world championship medallist in the triathlon.

Four years ago at the Sydney Games she was on her way to becoming Canada's first two-sport athlete at the same Olympics. But she crashed in the cycling portion of the triathlon and didn't finish. She injured her hip and hand and missed the 10,000 metre run in Sydney. However she came back strong two years later with the triathlon gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
