Gary Reed initially began his track and field career as a long jumper and triple jumper. Back in 1999 at the Pan Am junior championships he finished fourth in the decathlon. By 2001, the versatile athlete was on Canada's team at the world championships in Edmonton and a member of the 4X400 relay squad.
Last year he definitely found his niche in the men's 800 metres and has big rivalry with Canadian record holder Achrif Tadili at the national level in the event. Reed won the Canadian title last year then ran into some bad luck at the world championships. He missed advancing to the second round by a mere 0.01 seconds.
This past February he broke the Canadian indoor record in the 800 clocking 1:46.47 at a meet in Arkansas. At the indoor worlds, more bad luck when in the first round he was forced off the track by an another runner.
