A decision to return to Calgary this season to train with her high school coaches, Mike and Brenda Van Tighem has helped Malindi Elmore qualify for the her first Olympic Games. She won her first Canadian title to solidy her Olympic spot in the women's 1,500 metres in July. Earlier in the year, she posted the fifth fastest time in the world at an international meet in Rome clocking 4:02.64. Her goal in Athens is to break the Canadian record of 4:00.27 set by Lynn Williams in 1985.
"I'm running well consistently," she said "Things are coming together at the right time and a lot of years of hard work are paying off."
She is studying for a master's degree in environmental design at the University of Calgary. She intends to pursue a career in community planning. Elmore initiaally ran track and cross country to help with her soccer which was the first sport she pursued seriously.
