Very quietly, Rhiannon Leier has established herself among the world's best in the women's 100 breaststroke. In 2000, she wasn't expected to make the Olympic team but delivered a strong performance at trials and finished 11th in Sydney. In 2001, she made the final at the world championships placing eight and was eighth again at last year's world where she pre-qualified for the 2004 Games.
Leier is also a busy woman out of the pool. She hosts a closed circuit TV show which is shown at Winnipeg's children hospital. That experience has incited to eventually pursue a career in broadcasting following her swimming career.
Her grandfather Eddie Leier played with the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks in the 1950's and is a member of the Manitoba baseball Hall of Fame. Her mother, Susan Leier, was Saskatchewan's Masters Athlete of the Year in 1991 for her excellence in cycling.
Rhiannon Leier attended the University of Miami (Florida) earning a bachelor in health sciences and was a three-time academic All American. In the pool she was a six-time NCAA All American.
