At age 11, Bernard Luttmer failed his bronze 4 level for Learn to Sail and had to repeat it the following summer. Seven years later, he went on to win the Canadian Youth Championships and a silver medal at the World Youth Championships. This year he qualified to compete at the Olympics in the Laser class by finishing 41st at the world championships but most importantly posting the best Canadian result in the event. It was great day for Luttmer who just missed making the 2000 Olympic team. "I've been thinking about qualifying for eight years and it finally happened," said Luttmer.
He has been ranked number-one in his class in Canada, the last three years and has been named the Canadian Yachting Association's male athlete of the year the last two years. He is also the first three-time North American champion since the 1970's
He recently graduated in mechanical engineering at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. He also runs a tutoring company called Course Cram.
