Ben Rutledge has been a member of Canada’s two -time defending world champion eights crew. That still didn’t assure a seat on the Olympic team. In fact when the crew was introduced at reception to show off its new racing suits in June, Rutledge wasn’t included. That was because he was battling back this year from a knee injury and didn’t race on the European World Cups this year. But head coach Mike Spracklen’s philosophy is there are no safe seats. A couple of late changes were made and Rutledge’s name was on the eights crew list when the Olympic team was finalized.
Rutledge graduated in commerce at UBC where he also learned to row. He lists as his hobbies sleeping a lot and ‘’dreaming of playing golf in Hawaii.’’
