Gavin Hassett is another experienced oarsman in the men's lightweight four and the only male rower with an Olympic medal in his possession. Hassett took the silver in lightweight fours at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Four years later he was seventh in the same event in Sydney. He joined the lightweight national team in 1993 and that year won the world title in the men's eights.
Hassett has a commercial pilot license and a diploma in aircraft maintenance engineering.
