Kara Grant competes in the little known sport of modern pentathlon. The modern pentathlon is a five-discipline sport that takes place in a single day. The events are running, swimming, horseback riding, fencing and shooting. Grant's first breakthrough was in 1997 when she won gold at the Pan Am Championships. Two years later she earned bronze at the 1999 Pan Am Games. She is a four-time national champion and currently ranked 14th in the world.
Grant and Monica Pinette are the first Canadian women to ever compete at the Olympics in the modern pentathlon. The women's event was added to the Olympic program in 2000. They are also the first Canadians in the sport, men or women, since the 1992 Barcelona Games. Grant competed in equestrian events as a youngster and it was through her Pony Club that she was introduced to the pentathlon. She currently lives and trains in Quebec City after earning a science degree at UPEI.
