Nicolas Gill is the greatest judoka ever developed in Canada. He has won two Olympic medals. Bronze in 1992 at Barcelona (famous for the fact no Canadian journalists attended his final match) in 86 kilos and a silver medal four years ago in Sydney in 100 kilos. He also earned silver and bronze respectively at the 1993 and 1995 world championships.
Athens will be Gill's fourth Games, however an injury has put his participation in jeopardy. He had reconstructive surgery on his right knee on Nov. 7 to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament and was told by doctors not to resume training until May. However he was back on the mat in February.
Since the last Olympics, Gill has also become a coach at the Shidokan Club where he trains. He started the sport at age six and won the second tournament he entered. In 1990 at age 17 he was selected for the 1990 Commonwealth Games team.
