Monique Kavelaars, the former Miss Teen Canada 1989, competes at her first Olympics in Athens as part of the women's epee team. She has plenty of international experience highlighted a by a silver medal in the women's epee team event at the 1999 Pan Am Games.

She comes from a family which has had quite a lot of success in the pageant world: her twin sister, Ingrid, was also Miss Teen London in 1987 and was first runner-up in Miss Teen Canada, and their older sister Annette was Miss London 1984, and competed in the 1985 Miss Canada Pageant. "I'm really proud to be part of the first Canadian team in history to qualify for the Olympics," said Dunnette.
