Adam Van Koeverden is Canada's best male flatwater kayaker since Renn Crichlow battled for medals at world championships and Olympic Games in the 90's. Van Koeverden established himself as a serious medal threat last year at the world championships when he won the silver medal in the men's K-1 1,000-metres.
He was one of three finalists for male athlete of the year at the Canadian Sport Awards this past spring.
Van Koeverden definitely feels he has a shot at the gold in Athens.
"No ones really dominated the last couple of years," he said. "Every World Cup there's been a different winner so it's wide open. The race will probably be even until the last 200 metres. Then who wants it most will win."
He'll also compete in the K-1 500 and reached the final in that event at worlds last year placing sixth.
"The 1,000 metre is still my main focus and I think racing the 500 will help me. Even if I didn't have the 500, I'd still put in full races in training on those days."
