An Olympic gold medal is the only big prize missing from Steve Giles' mantlepiece. The flatwater canoe singles specialist has excelled at every level.
In Sydney four years ago, he climbed his first Olympic podium to receive a bronze medal for his performance in the men's C-1 1,000 metres.
An electrical engineering graduate from Dalhousie, he works full time for Lavalin SNC and is married with a child.
Many thought Giles would retire after Sydney.
"I'm surprised that I made it to another Olympics," said Giles, sixth in the C-1 500 at the 1992 Olympics and eighth in the same event at the 1996 Atlanta Games. "But I just kept competing and I kept winning. It's a good feeling to know I have a chance at another Olympic medal and I'm going to train as hard as I can to make that happen. But this is it. There's no more after this one."
