Karen Furneaux has been one Canada's top international competitors in both the singles and crewboats for several years. Athens is her second straight Olympics and this time she'll be the leader in the women's K-4 500 event. At the Sydney Games she placed a solid fifth in the women's K-2 500 with Caroline Brunet.

Even though she has competed in Brunet's shadow, Furneaux has quietly totalled 28 international medals in her career including gold in the K-1 200 at the 2001 world championships.

She is not only a great athlete; she is an excellent student too. Furneaux has an undergraduate degree in kinesiology from Dalhousie University and is a Masters candidate for 2004 in Sport Psychology at Dalhousie.
