Mark Heese injured his knee at the season opening event but battled through it to secure a berth for himself and partner John Child at a third consecutive Olympics. The duo have certainly been pioneers for the sport in Canada and enjoyed plenty of international success in their many years on the international circuit including bronze at the 1996 Olympics.

They have played together for 10 years and competed in 111 events on the FIVB tour compiling 15 medals and earning close to $500,000 in prize money. Their best season was 1996 when the earned $97,000 and posted their sole victory on the tour.

While they were medal favorites in Atlanta and Sydney, they'll be the underdogs in Athens. They have won but one medal on the FIVB tour since the 2000 Olympics and that was back in 2002 at the stop in Montreal.
