Back in 1999, Andy Stewart retired from baseball to launch a coaching career but made his return to play this year with the Winnipeg Goldeyes in the Northern League. The lure of a potential spot on the Olympic roster is the main reason he decided to unhook his catcher's mitt. Stewart brings plenty of experience with 15 years in pro ball including a stint with the Kansas City Royals in 1997. The Royals signed Stewart as an amateur free agent in 1989.
Stewart played a key role in helping Canada win the bronze medal, its first podium finish in international baseball, at the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg. He hit.452 with a tournament-leading four home runs and 15 RBI's. He is one of six returning players form that Pan Am team best known for its dramatic victory over the Americans.
