Chris Mears is one of 17 returning players from the Canadian team that earned an Olympic berth at a qualifying tournament last November in Panama. It was at that tournament that U.S., Puerto, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic all failed to qualify.
Mears, a right handed reliever, is also one of 15 players with major league experience on the Canadian team after playing 29 games last season with the Detroit Tigers. He is still in the Detroit chain. Mears has split his time between Vancouver and Victoria since age 12 and has lived permanently in Victoria since 1996, practicing with local players during the winter months. The Victoria area is home base to an incredible 40 athletes on the entire Olympic team.
