A former player with Oklahoma State he spent the previous three season in the Anaheim Angels' system. His older brother Aaron has played parts of three seasons with the Kansas City Royals and was a member of the 1999 Pan Am Games team.

It was his older brother who influenced Gueil in pursuing a baseball career in his home province where the sport continues to thrive at the developmental level. Gueil was with Team Canada last year at the qualifier and had a strong tournament hitting .318 including a two-for-three performance in the clinching game.
