Chris Begg will interrupt a fast climb to success in professional baseball this year in order to fulfill a unique opportunity to play for Canada at the Olympic Games. Begg, a righthanded pitcher in the San Francisco Giants organization, has been bouncing around the minors this season starting games in A, AA and AAA. Last year he played the first part of the year in the Northern League with the St. Paul Saints.
Begg was the winning pitcher in last year's crucial quarterfinal game against Colombia at the Olympic qualifying tournament. Canada clinched an Olympic berth by defeating Mexico in the semifinal. Two years ago he was playing college ball at Niagara University in northern New York and had just 22 games experience at Jamestown (Frontier League) and Albany-Colonie (Northeast) when he joined the Saints.
