MANCHESTER, England (AP) - Already out of title contention, Sri Lanka pulled off a surprise 23-run win over England in a tri-series one-day international at Old Trafford Sunday.
After dismissing Sri Lanka for 229, England was well placed on 100 for two in the 19th over. But Nasser Hussain's team collapsed sensationally against the slow bowlers and was bowled out for 206. The win ended Sri Lanka's five-match losing streak after it had lost the four matches in the series to put itself out of contention for Saturday's final at Lord's. England, four wins and two losses, will meet unbeaten India in the final.
Led by skipper Sanath Jayasuriya, who took 3-38, the Sri Lankan spinners took advantage of the afternoon sun as the England batsmen capitulated on a spinner-friendly surface.
Ronnie Irani, 28 runs, and Paul Collingwood, 29, had kept England's hopes afloat, but fell at crucial stages to some ordinary shots and poor running between the wickets.
Sri Lanka was brilliant on the field accounting for three run outs and taking a couple of outstanding catches.
Earlier, openers Marcus Trescothick, 27, and Nick Knight, 29, had given England's run chase a kick start before falling to leftarm seamer Nuwan Zoysa.
When skipper Hussain, 28, was run out to a poor call by Alec Stewart, it began a middle-order slump from which England never recovered.
Sunday's match was meaningless but England's batting had left room for concern for the remaining two encounters against in-form India, the only unbeaten side.
