India sends Sri Lanka out of contention for triangular one-day series

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) - India sent Sri Lanka crashing out of contention for the triangular one-day series by defeating its Asian neighbour by four wickets at Edgbaston on Saturday. After dismissing Sri Lanka for 187, India recovered from 59 for four to make the victory target with 11 balls to spare.

Rahul Dravid, 64, and Yuvraj Singh, 37, shared a match-winning 91-run stand for the fifth-wicket. India, with 14 points will take on England, 10 points, in the series final at Lord's next Saturday. Sri Lanka, which won the first triangular series here in 1998, is yet to register a win and still has to play England at Old Trafford on Sunday.

India made heavy weather of the run chase when it lost a wicket to the first ball of the innings for the second match in-a-row.

After losing skipper Sourav Ganguly against England at Chester-le-Street on Thursday, India lost opener Virender Sehwag when he was bowled by Vaas.

It was the fourth time Sehwag had fallen for a first ball duck in his 35-match career.

Ganguly, 24 runs, took India to 30 before it lost three wickets for 29 runs, including Sachin Tendulkar for 19.

Fernando, 2-22, who dropped Tendulkar on 18, immediately returned to the attack and deceived him with a slower ball.

Man-of-the-match Dravid, caught off a no-ball on nine, continued from where he left off in his 82 against England while Yuvraj, the latest batting find, continued to impress. The pair hit two sixes and nine boundaries between them.

Yuvraj had scored 64 not out, 31, and 40 not out in his three previous innings.

"We're batting pretty deep now," Ganguly said. "We've got the balance right with Dravid 'keeping wickets."
